What is a Corrupted Computer Registry File and How Does it Happen?
By Ronald E. Hudkins
Of course you know, it would take an entire book to explain why your computer
slows to a performance crawl and all the measures available to you to fix the problem. However in
simplistic increments we can at least begin learning how to recognize and resolve common computer problems.
A corruption in a registry file in your computer could be a file that has
missing pieces within it or a file that has become somehow infected. We’ll cover viruses, Trojans
and other things later, we just know for the moment, we have a file that isn’t readable. Because
this file can
not be read by the computer appropriately, it can no longer accomplish what it
was originally designed to do. Basically speaking, if the file contains data; you can’t read the
data. And if it was a program or system file: it simply doesn’t upload or if it did, it wouldn’t
work properly.
Sometimes registry files become corrupt because they are incomplete or
impartial – they are simply just not an entire file. Often, as we search the Internet we
inadvertently pick up a computer virus, Trojan, Adware, Spyware and a whole lot of things that interfere with our computer’s
functionality. Some of these things are specifically intended to alter registry files, attach to
files or software, and delete complete lines of code and another whole boatload of tactics. These
inappropriate passengers within our computer sometimes allow the snatching or destruction of personal or financial data from our computer hard
drive or are intentional efforts to destroy an operating system for whatever means. Unwanted
Adware, Spyware and other cookies can slow computer performance to an aggravating crawl. But, not
to worry, geeks, computer industry and a whole lot of other professionals are on our side to help us through the many integrity issues within
our computers.
Other means of introducing or causing a registry file corruption is by
introducing or installing what we thought was an innocent download that unfortunately, was loaded with its own issues. Then too, we could have cut and pasted into (added to) a file and altered functional code
stringers. Also, you or I could accidentally (because we are not always Rocket Scientist
Intensive) upload a file or software application that is not compatible with our computer system’s operating system. I could go on for pages as to how computer files become corrupted but I suspect, you have a decent working
knowledge as to how easy it is for files to be altered.
It also helps to understand the information on your computer is stored on a
magnetic disk called a hard drive. The disk and in some cases disks, are divided into literally
thousands of sectors and blocks of information all of which have starting and ending points.
Despite the fact a computer is all logic based; related data isn’t always stored in one contiguous block or the same sectors. However, far above how in my inventory of understanding, your computer operating system in most cases; keeps
track as to where each file begins. So, despite the fact an application or document is scattered
all over the disk in various segmented pieces, each chunk of the file stores a record of where the next chunk of the file is actually
located. Under normal circumstances, the disk drive head follows its logical directions, skipping
from one spot to the next and actually manages to gather up the entire needed registry file. If
by chance something has gone hay wire for a billion or so reasons and some of the instructions came up missing then; you have once again, a
corrupted file.
The missing information could be the result of several reasons some of which
include physical damage to the disk surface, the disk read head has its own idea of a path to take that somehow became irrational, you placed
a magnet on or adjacent to your computer, etc. Just know, the content of the files is most likely
still there however, not in is normally orderly way. Another words, sometimes a part of one file
will be tail gated and attached to a part of a different file and the parade of events might just end up being followed by yet another chunk
of a completely unrelated different file. Now that’s a hardship you didn’t see coming but, you
are faced with the reality of a file corruption.
The thing you have to understand is even though drivers are bigger, better and
faster, software programs on the newer computers are much more resource dependant and even though microprocessors have advanced light years
ahead, they are still required to perform many more functions within the ever growing demand upon our computer operating
systems. To make a very long story short, corruption within your computers’ registry files can
not always be effectively and efficiently avoided any more.
Now before you think your slow computer that you paid 1, 2 or 3 thousand
dollars plus for can only be repaired by some service center wizard geek please rest assured, there are many simple things you and I can do
for free or with the assistance of very inexpensive tools/software that will keep our computers up and running at optimal
performance. These modern days require that not only folks running Windows 95 on a 286 operating
system but those working with 486
plus systems still need to scan for viruses and spyware
regularly and just as important; we definitely need to scan for and repair registry corruption too.
Normally, these simple procedures require two separate programs, i.e. a
virus/spyware program and a registry cleaner program as; the first set of tools won’t identify file corruptions. My initial advice would be to scan for viruses/spyware first, then do a registry scan and cleaning because,
if and when you actually do remove spyware, it will most likely leave behind registry file corruption. Also bear in mind that scanning your computer and having the registry reviewed by and fixed by registry
repair software would be highly beneficial if undertaken at the minimum of once a week. Not the
worry, the whole process is virtually automatic and usually takes less than 10 minutes.
Well, I certainly didn’t make you a complete expert on computer optimization
and that is Okay. We don’t want to run out there and build computers; we just want the one we
have - to run effectively right?
We’ll talk about other things we need to do with our computers and I’ll of
course do my best to walk you through how to delete cookies, empty temporary Internet files, defragment your disk and other things to keep our
computers up and running effectively. In the mean while, I think I can give you a real honest
overview of Registry repair software that like it or not, you are going to want to have in your arsenal of computer maintenance
needs. Although I’m not going to specifically endorse any given registry fixing software
program/tool I will say it is a necessary have to have program! I make a living on the Internet
and because of this, I use a registry cleaner on a daily bases. To make a long story short,
registry fixing is a life saver for my computers’ operating system.
